Italian Renaissance SculptorFlorentine sculptor Donatello is known as one of history's most skilled sculptors. As a sculptor, Donatello created many influential sculptures such as the prophets on the baptistery, and his statue of St. Mark. The statue that is considered to be his most famous is his statue of David. Commissioned to Donatello in 1434 by the Medici family the statue of David is one of the most important works of art in the time period because of it's structure. The statue was constructed entirely out of bronze, this material had not been used to create sculptures since the classical times of the Greeks and Romans. Donatello's style in sculpture was very exact. Much like the other artists in Italy at the time, human anatomy was extremely precise especially in sculpture. In addition to that the style of Donatello demonstrated the use of the natural surroundings which the sculpture would sit. He carved by making extremely shallow marks that would create shadow when light was shone upon them. This shows the innovative and masterful technique of the artist that embodied high renaissance beliefs.

Northern Renaissance SculptorClaus Sluter was one of the most famous sculptors of the northern renaissance. Sluter was known for his most famous work the Well of Moses. The sculpture infused the Gothic influences that were still dominant among many northern European artists at the time. Sluter used this Gothic style and mixed it with a accurate depiction of the human body as well as a very biblical based style of work. In contrary to Donatello, Sluter focuses on classic styles and perspectives.
